Scrimshawed Myerchin Rigging Knife

US$249.00
sold out

The BEST sailor’s rigging knife on the market just got way cooler. We’ve taken Myerchin’s AF300 ‘Captain’ folding rigging knife (with folding marlinspike) and added some traditional sailor flair by scrimshawing traditional icons on one side of the handle, and ‘HOLD FAST’ script on the other.

Scrimshaw is a type of art that involves engraving or carving designs into bone, ivory, or other materials, and originated in the late 18th century as a pastime for whalers and sailors. The Wampanoag people of Cape Cod also created scrimshaw for thousands of years before the whaling industry. It’s basically “tattoo” art for tools. We use a local artist in New England who hand-scrimshaws each knife one at a time in painstaking detail. If you like the concept, we can even do custom knives with your boat’s name or initials instead of the ‘HOLD FAST’ text.

We debated making our own knives, but as users for years of Myerchin’s wonderful line of rigging knives, we thought, ‘why fix what isn’t broken?’ So we’ve partnered with Myerchin to make what we think is the most badass sailor’s knife out there, and a perfect complement to the Harborburn Cannons!

More from Myerchin about the AF300 ‘Captain’ Rigging Knife:

Our newest design for the seaman who wants the absolute finest rigging knife available. Crafted from Stainless, Natural Bone and German Marine Stainless Steel. The Natural Bone is an excellent base for adding traditional personalized scrimshaw. Of course our bone handle is sustainable… carefully selected bovine material. The Pro-grade German Marine stainless that we use is comparable to 440C for hardness and edge-holding properties with additional anti-oxidation elements added for the final crafting of our knives. Extreme strength and light weight. The Generation 2 Series features our advanced, springless locking mechanism (securely locks blade, spike, or both) / Includes Cordura nylon sheath / belt (or pocket) clip / Serial Number / Improved One hand open with new “Open Assist Lever” that allows the user to easily and safely open the blade under difficult conditions. 3/4 Serrated Blade. Built on our new “Captain Size” heavy duty BF300 Frame, this is a knife that will easily last a lifetime… or two. Artfully packaged in our presentation box.

A note about natural bone knife handles: The real beauty of a natural material comes from the unique qualities of each piece. Every handle has slight color differences, natural stress lines, and the ability to weather and age gracefully as it is handled by the owner. You can scrimshaw the material, protect it with a natural carnauba wax, or just let nature slowly change its patina. With care, it should last for several generations.
