We'll start in Marstrand, the capital of sailing on the West Coast of Sweden and a short bus ride from Gothenburg, where there is a large international airport. Marstrand is the 'Annapolis' of the Swedish west coast, a fantastically beautiful little sailing town situated on the rocky islands that make up this archipelago.
We'll spend a few days exploring the west coast islands before sailing overnight around the southern Swedish peninsula and making landfall in the medieval city of Visby, situated on the island of Gotland. Mia and I have sailed to Visby twice on Arcturus, and it's one of our favorite stops. The city still has a wall around it, and exploring in town feels like walking around a Lego castle!
We encourage you to sign up sooner than later for this trip, as there will be a fair amount of planning to do in order to get the proper visas for visiting Russia. St. Petersburg was on our list to sail to in Arcturus, but we never got the chance, so we're taking it now! It's a full 350-mile jaunt direct from Visby, and even though we'll be in the Baltic, it'll very much be an offshore passage, with perhaps even greater challenges since we'll encounter very variable weather, lots of shipping, and of course nearly 24-hours of daylight!
After we explore Russia, we'll return to Stockholm and wrap up in the trip in the capital of Scandinavia and Mia's home city!
If you've not researched the Swedish archipelago before, you don't know what you're missing - it's truly the most spectacular sailing area I've ever been through, and an absolute bucket-list place to sail.
