Conversations with Sailors

'On the Wind' is the evolution of Andy Schell's '59 North' podcast. The show is, quite simply, long-form conversations with sailors from around the world. 'On the Wind' (formerly called '59 Degrees North') is informal chats with people from around the world of sailing - tall ship captains, Cape Horners, sailing authors, Volvo Ocean Race skippers, yacht designers, family cruisers, Arctic adventurers and more. Plus the occasional rant on ocean safety or narrative stories about crossing big oceans in small sailboats. Our aim is to define what creates success in the sailing world and figure out how to accomplish dreams on the high seas. New episodes publish weekly or bi-weekly, usually on Tuesday, and are available free on iTunes, Stitcher, the podcast archive here, and are syndicated on SAILfeed.

Fun Facts

Where does your money go?

Yes, the podcast is free, and always will remain free. But it's not in fact free to produce. As I've said on the show, the podcast has become a way for me to advertise my sailing trips to you guys, my listeners, so I realize there is value in that. But there is also value to the folks that will never come sailing with me. In the interest of transparency, I thought it appropriate to offer up an idea of the costs involved in hosting the show (in the hopes that it'll generate more donations!)

  • Libsyn hosting fee: $25.00 / month
  • Andy's time (scheduling, recording, editing & producing): ~4 hours per episode, not including travel time
  • Recording equipment costs: ~$750.00
  • Adobe Photoshop graphic design software: $25.00/month
